What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, often abbreviated as BJJ, is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting and submission grappling. Rooted in techniques adapted from Judo and traditional Japanese Jujutsu, BJJ emphasises leverage, timing, and technique over brute strength, making it a highly effective discipline for people of all sizes.

The core philosophy of BJJ is simple: it’s about using technique and strategy to control and subdue an opponent, often from a dominant ground position. Students of BJJ learn how to apply joint locks, chokes, and positional control to defend themselves and overcome opponents. It’s not just about physical ability—BJJ sharpens the mind, builds resilience, and fosters problem-solving skills.

How Does BJJ Differ From Judo?

While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo share common origins, they have distinct characteristics that make each art unique.

  • Focus on Ground Fighting: Judo traditionally emphasises throws and takedowns, aiming to bring an opponent to the ground with precision and power. Once on the ground, Judo’s groundwork (known as “newaza”) is often limited in scope and duration during competition. BJJ, by contrast, prioritises ground fighting, with extensive techniques for maintaining control, advancing positions, and achieving submissions.
  • Techniques and Goals: Judo’s primary objective in competition is to execute a perfect throw (known as “ippon”) or to pin the opponent. BJJ focuses on submissions, such as joint locks or chokes, to end a match, and practitioners train for prolonged engagements on the ground.
  • Training Style: Both arts offer intense training sessions, but BJJ classes often involve more time practising positional sparring and live rolling (grappling against resisting opponents). Judo classes tend to place greater emphasis on drilling throws and grip fighting.
  • Uniform and Rules: While both sports use a gi (traditional uniform), the grips and movements allowed in BJJ and Judo vary. For example, BJJ practitioners can hold the belt and pants during grappling, while Judo has stricter grip rules to facilitate throws.
